BENZOIC ACID (CAS: 65-85-0)
Benzoic acid is an aromatic monocarboxylic acid, composed of a benzene ring and a carboxylic group.
Uses:
Intermediate in organic syntheses
An efficient and powerful reagent in the synthesis of numerous types of organic substances with applications in various industries.
Corrosion inhibitors
Rust inhibitor in the metals and alloys industry: it inhibits the corrosion of iron and steel in acidic solutions by adsorption at the metal/solution interface.
Alkyd resins
Benzoic acid improves the hardness, gloss, adhesion, and chemical resistance of alkyd resin surface coatings in the alkyd resin industry.
Auxiliary in polymerization processes
Retardant in the rubber industry: it limits the molecular weight of the polymer during its formation and contributes to the constant viscosity of the polymer melt during its processing.
Activator in polymerization processes.
Plastics
Benzoic acid's ability to withstand high temperatures makes it an ideal material for various types of plastic products such as food packaging or automotive parts.
Food preservatives
It is used in acidic foods and beverages, canned vegetables, fruits, and meat, as it prevents the growth of microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, and yeast for an extended period.
Animal feed additives
Benzoic acid is an animal feed additive and flavoring compound for all animal species and a zootechnical additive for pig and poultry species.
Benzoic acid regulates the pH of feed, contributes to the complete digestion and absorption of nutrients, fights against pathogenic microorganisms, reduces urinary pH, and significantly reduces ammonia emission. It can be used as a growth promoter and preservative.
Pharmaceutical and cosmetic products
In pharmaceutical preparations, it is used as an antifungal agent for the treatment of skin diseases such as ringworm and athlete's foot, a component of Whitfield's ointment, in ointments to alleviate scabies, as a decongestant inhalant, expectorant, and pain reliever.
In personal care products such as hair treatment products, it serves as a necessary base for useful medications that protect the scalp from fragility and loss, play a positive role in strengthening the skin's protective barrier, thus helping the skin retain moisture, in the production of deodorants and perfumes, highlighting the scent of a product and/or perfuming the skin, controlling the pH of cosmetic products, protecting cosmetic products from microbial alteration.
Other uses
Benzoic acid is used as a preservative in surface coatings, emulsions, polishes, waxes, and liquid detergents, a drilling mud additive for oil recovery applications, in the manufacture of fungicidal preparations used in agriculture to protect a variety of cultivated plants, a dye fixative helping to set colors in fabrics, or as a mold repellent, making it an ideal treatment for both natural and synthetic fibers.
